Instructions
Prepare the beef mixture
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, beaten egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
Pro tip: Avoid overmixing to keep the patties tender.
Form the patties
Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape into oval patties about 1 cm (1/2 inch) thick.
Pro tip: Press a slight indentation into the centre of each patty to help them cook evenly.
Cook the patties
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add patties and cook for 5-6 minutes on each side, until browned and cooked through to an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
Pro tip: Use a thermometer to check the temperature at the centre of each patty.
Caramelize the onions
In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium and add butter. Once melted, add onions and cook for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until caramelized and golden brown.
Pro tip: Be patient and allow the onions to caramelize slowly for the best flavour.
Prepare the gravy
Sprinkle flour over the onions and cook for 1 minute. Gradually stir in beef broth and thyme. Simmer for 5-7 minutes until the gravy thickens.
Pro tip: Stir constantly to prevent lumps from forming.
Combine and serve
Return the patties to the skillet, spoon the onion gravy over the top, and simmer for 2-3 minutes to heat through. Serve immediately.
Pro tip: Garnish with fresh parsley for a pop of colour.
