Haitian Pumpkin Soup from My Friend Martine

80 min 6 servings Medium
Haitian Pumpkin Soup, known as 'Soup Joumou', is a deeply cherished dish in Haitian culture. Traditionally served on New Year's Day, this soup symbolizes freedom and independence, paying homage to Haiti's liberation from colonial rule. This version, inspired by my friend Martine, combines the rich, earthy flavour of pumpkin with a medley of vegetables and spices to create a comforting and satisfying meal. It's a celebration of culinary traditions passed down through generations, with each family adding their unique touch to the beloved recipe.

Instructions

1

Cook the Pumpkin

In a large pot, bring 2 litres of water to a boil. Add the cubed pumpkin and cook until tender, about 20 minutes. Remove from heat and mash the pumpkin until smooth.

Pro tip: Use a potato masher or an immersion blender for a smoother texture.

2

Cook the Beef

In another pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add beef shank pieces and brown on all sides, about 5-7 minutes.

Pro tip: Browning the beef enhances the flavour of the soup.

3

Sauté Aromatics

Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the pot with beef. Sauté until the onion becomes translucent, about 3 minutes.

4

Combine Ingredients

Add the mashed pumpkin to the beef pot. Stir in the turnip, carrots, Scotch bonnet pepper, thyme, parsley, salt, and pepper.

Pro tip: For a milder soup, remove the Scotch bonnet pepper before serving.

5

Simmer the Soup

Reduce heat to low, cover, and let the soup simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Pro tip: Adjust seasoning to taste during the simmering process.

6

Finish and Serve

Stir in lime juice and noodles (if using) and cook for an additional 5-10 minutes until noodles are tender. Serve hot.

Pro tip: Garnish with fresh parsley and serve with lime wedges on the side.
