Instructions
Activate the yeast
In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
Pro tip: If the mixture doesn't foam, your yeast might be inactive. Start with fresh yeast.
Make the dough
Add flour, salt, and oil to the yeast mixture. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
Pro tip: Use a wooden spoon for easier mixing.
Knead the dough
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Pro tip: The dough should spring back when poked.
First rise
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Pro tip: A warm oven (turned off) can be a good rising place.
Shape the loaf
Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased loaf pan (9x5 inches).
Pro tip: Ensure the loaf is smooth on top for an even crust.
Second rise
Cover the loaf with a cloth and let it rise again for about 45 minutes until it rises slightly above the pan.
Pro tip: Be careful not to let it over-rise.
Preheat the oven
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) while the dough rises.
Bake the bread
Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
Pro tip: An instant-read thermometer should read 190°F (88°C) when done.
Cool the loaf
Remove the bread from the oven, let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Pro tip: Cool completely before slicing for the best texture.
