New Zealand park barbecues follow the Australian pattern: free electric plates, push-button, no fuel to bring. Coastal reserves and regional parks have the densest coverage.
Heat the plate empty and scrape it before you start. A shared plate carries whatever came before it, and five minutes of dry heat is the whole of the hygiene routine.
Fire restrictions apply to open flames in a way they do not to electric plates — in a dry summer the electric barbecue may be the only legal way to cook outdoors in a reserve.
